Alice Brown Chittenden Biography

Born in Brockport, NY, Chittenden came to California at an early age.  Her father was a successful miner who encouraged her interest in art.  She began her studies at the San Francisco School of Design in 1877 under Virgil Williams, and later taught there for over 40 years (1897-1940).  Over the years she made several trips to New York, France and Italy to exhibit and study.  A resident of Pacific Heights, Chittenden was active as a teacher and painter in San Francisco.  She was a member of the San Francisco Art Association, the American Federation of Arts, and the San Francisco Society of Women Artists.
